A bomb threat at Erode Head Post Office was confirmed as a hoax after a thorough police search revealed no explosives.
A bomb threat to the Erode Head Post Office on Gandhiji Road in the city turned out to be a hoax after the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS) and police personnel conducted a thorough sweep of the premises on Monday.
The police said the Regional Passport Office, Coimbatore, received an email at 10.15 a.m. stating that a bomb had been planted at the Head Post Office and would explode at 12.15 p.m. The district police were alerted, and a team led by Town Deputy Superintendent of Police M. Muthukumaran, along with the BDDS and a sniffer dog, was pressed into service.
The post office, which houses the Passport Seva Kendra and an Aadhaar centre, was temporarily evacuated. As a precautionary measure, passport services were temporarily suspended and members of the public were asked to vacate the premises.
A meticulous search was carried out across all sections of the building, including the passport service and speed post parcel divisions. Metal detectors were deployed, and each area was examined thoroughly. After an intensive search operation, the police confirmed that no explosives were found and declared the threat to be a hoax. Normalcy returned to the post office within an hour. The police have launched an investigation to trace the person responsible for the threat.
