Heavy rain lashed several parts of Tiruchi district on Sunday from 8 p.m. till midnight. The downpour left trees uprooted, electrical poles damaged, and power supply disrupted.
Kallakudi in the district recorded the maximum of 107.4 mm rainfall during the 24-hour period ending 8.30 a.m. Monday, followed by Tiruchi airport 96.6 mm and Golden Rock 77.2 mm. Tiruchi Junction registered 66 mm of rain and Tiruchi town 60 mm.
Several parts of the delta region also received moderate to heavy rainfall in 24 hours ending 8.30 a.m. on Monday.
In Tiruchi, a total of 11 trees crashed in K.K. Nagar, Rarajam Salai, Williams Road, and Thillinagar. Seven trees crashed in Zone 1 and four in Zone 5. There were reports of branches falling due to strong winds in several places. Tiruchi Corporation workers were deployed across the city to clear the debris.
“As many as 40 trees, especially in Zone 5, crashed during the summer showers this month. We have taken steps to plant native trees at these places with the help of the District Green Committee,” said M. Vijay Chandran, City Health Officer.
The fallen trees snapped electricity cables in several areas, leading to disruption in power supply. Power supply was resumed in Woraiyur, Edamalaipattipudur, and Crawford only in the early hours of Monday.
Several low-lying areas were flooded, causing hardship to commuters. Residential areas near the airport, K.K. Nagar, J.K. Nagar, Karumandapam and Crawford, Bharathidasan Salai, Major Saravanan Road and other major roads were inundated, hampering vehicular traffic and leaving vehicles stranded. Water stagnation was seen on the premises of the office of the Regional Joint Director of Animal Husbandry in Tiruchi.
