Green shade nets installed at major traffic junctions in Erode provide temporary relief to motorists during scorching summer heatwaves in the city.
In a move to provide temporary relief to motorists enduring the searing summer heat, green shade nets are being installed at major traffic junctions in the city.
With average temperature in the district consistently exceeding 100 degrees Fahrenheit since February, heat-related challenges have intensified. The heatwave conditions, prevailing between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., have also impacted vehicular movement.
Responding to the situation, the Olirum Erodu Foundation — an organisation dedicated to addressing urban challenges — approached the civic body seeking permission to install shade nets at critical locations, including the Collectorate Junction on Perundurai Road, Panneerselvam Park, and Kalaimadu Silai, all of which experience heavy traffic flow. The civic authorities approved the proposal, and the Highways Department also granted its concurrence.
Installation at the Collectorate Junction was completed on Sunday, while work at the other two junctions commenced on Monday.
Motorists have welcomed the initiative, saying the shade nets offer much-needed relief during long waits at traffic signals. “Nets are essential for us at busy junctions,” said a motorist at the Collectorate Junction, where the average waiting time is around 120 seconds.
Officials said more junctions could be considered for similar installations based on public feedback and the severity of the heat conditions in the coming weeks.
