Amid rising tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, Saudi Arabia has opened a new Red Sea route to supply crude oil to India.
Amid escalating tensions between the US, Israel and Iran, which have intensified the crisis in the Strait of Hormuz, India has received a boost in energy security. Saudi Arabia has started using a new route to supply crude oil to India. Several tankers have already left the Yanbu port in the Red Sea, heading toward Indian ports. This development comes at a time when disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz have forced Gulf oil-producing nations to explore alternative supply routes.
The ongoing conflict in the Middle East has significantly threatened maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. Iran has targeted some vessels in the area, causing ships to avoid the passage. Typically, about 20% of global oil trade passes through this strategic waterway. India’s energy imports from Gulf countries largely rely on this route.
Saudi Arabia has now begun supplying oil to India via the Red Sea. Tracking data from Kpler indicates that four crude oil tankers from Saudi Arabia are currently en route to India, carrying a combined total of 6 million barrels. Additionally, India is expected to receive an extra 9 to 10 million barrels by the end of the month.
