June brings relief to Chennai with rain showers, cooling down the city after hot temperatures, more rain expected.
It has been only a few days into the month of June and the city has already registered a wet spell as rain lashed several places here on Tuesday evening, offering residents a break from the warm weather.
Many places received up to 2 cm of rain within a short duration on Tuesday evening. While weather stations at Ennore port and Nungambakkam recorded nearly 2 cm of rainfall, between 5.30 p.m. and 7.30 p.m., rain gauges in places such as Villivakkam, Puzhal, and YMCA Nandanam registered 1 cm of rainfall. Meenambakkam and Chembarambakkam also registered rainfall.
Over the past few days, the hot westerly winds prevailing over Tamil Nadu and Puducherry had spiked the day temperature in many places. Chennai’s Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam recorded a maximum temperature of 38.8 degrees Celsius and 38.3 degrees Celsius, respectively.
The Southwest monsoon-triggered rainfall that eased over most parts of Tamil Nadu, too, had led to dry weather and an increase in the temperature over the past few days. The near-normal and slightly above-average temperature brought thunderstorms to places across Chennai on Tuesday.
Regional Meteorological Centre, Chennai, has forecast chances of thunderstorms with light to moderate rainfall on Wednesday in some parts of Chennai. The city is likely to experience a maximum temperature of 37 degrees Celsius or 38 degrees Celsius on Wednesday.
