Elderly couple struggles to get government-allocated land registered, facing obstacles despite court order and police protection.
An elderly couple, who were allocated three cents of land by the State government about three years ago were yet to get their land registered in their name.
S. Raman, who was accompanied by his wife to the Collector’s office to submit a petition during the weekly grievance redress meeting here on Monday, said that he belonged to the Scheduled Caste community. Based on that, “a piece of land at Nariyamangalam village near Vickramangalam, where we temporarily lived was allotted,” he said.
Following the allotment, a government surveyor who visited the village to measure the land, was stopped by the villagers, he added. “We sought Madurai Bench of Madras High Court for getting our land. The court also issued an order for survey and ordered for police protection during the documenting process,” Mr. Raman said.
Armed with the order, the couple had visited the tahsildar office several times and had even paid the surveyor for measuring the land allotted to them, he said. “But, till now, no action has been taken by the district administration to measure the land and provide us the documents,” he said.
Since they were aged and not supported by their relatives, they wished to have a land of their own, Mr. Raman said.
