Eight Keralites who were rescued and repatriated along with 275 Indian nationals from Myanmar and Thailand, in coordination with local authorities, are set to arrive in Thiruvananthapuram on Tuesday night. The rescued people were taken to Mae Sot City in Thailand and later flown to New Delhi by an Indian Air Force aircraft.
They hail from different districts of Kerala, including Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Thrissur, and Kasaragod. Five people will be taken to Kochi by Air India flight (AI505) at around 10.20 p.m. while three will be taken to Thiruvananthapuram by IndiGo flight (6E 2189) at around 11.45 p.m.
The returnees were trapped by fake recruitment agents and forced to commit cybercrimes (scamming) at fake call centres, including in the infamous area known as Golden Triangle. The rescue was facilitated by the Myanmar, Thailand and Indian embassies in coordination with local governments.
NoRKA-Roots, the field agency of the Department of Non-Resident Keralites Affairs (NoRKA), has made arrangements to bring them to Kerala from New Delhi.
