CPCRI scientists report new pest infesting areca nut kernel

Identified as Xylosandrus crassiusculus, a scolytid beetle was found in young areca nut gardens
A team of scientists from the Central Plantation Crops Research Institute (CPCRI), Regional Station, Vitla in Dakshina Kannada, have identified a new pest infesting areca nut kernel at plantations.
It has been identified as Xylosandrus crassiusculus, a scolytid beetle measuring 2.5-2.8 mm. It was found in young gardens located at Markanja village of Sullia taluk and Kaniyooru village of Kadaba taluk during the regular pest and disease surveillance programme, the CPCRI said in a statement on Saturday.

The High Court of Karnataka on Tuesday ordered the issue of a notice to the State government on a PIL petition, which had complained about disturbances caused to people residing in the localities around the National Public School situated in Rajajinagar 5th block due to use of loudspeakers with high volume in the school and parking of school buses in residential areas.
