Even in residential areas near wetlands in Chennai, these birds now tenaciously cling to water-filled plots. They are particular about dense vegetation, but seem less choosy about the species. Even a mat of Ludwigia adscendens, which is not as dense as water hyacinth, would do — here is an illustration from a residential neighbourhood not far from the Perumbakkam wetland
