BJP is against Constitution as it wants an unequal society, claims Priyanka Gandhi

Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi accuses BJP of weakening Constitution, judiciary, and pro-people laws, urging people to fight for rights.

“The BJP is anti-Constitution as it wants an unequal society. It is opposed to the policies of reservation and equal opportunity. That is why it is trying to systematically weaken the Constitution and end attempts at creating an egalitarian state since Independence,” Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi claimed in Belagavi on Tuesday.

She was speaking at the Jai Bapu, Jai Bhim, Jai Samvidhan rally organised as part of Gandhi Bharata to mark the centenary celebrations of the 1924 Belgaum session.

She claimed that the BJP is “doing its best to weaken the judiciary” and its leaders are opposed to pro-people laws like RTI Act.

“They have weakened them. They are changing rules to systematise corruption. They have weakened Lok Pal and other Constitutional agencies like the Election Commission of India. They have failed to protect women in all the BJP-ruled States. They changed labour laws and took away the rights of workers. They wanted to bring anti-farmer laws. But farmers protested against the move. Over 700 farmers died in the agitation, but the government did not budge. It backed off only when the elections were nearing,” she said.

Holding a copy of the Constitution that sported a red cover, she urged the people to fight for their rights. “This is not just a book. This is a protective cover for your life. The ideals of the freedom struggles have inspired the Constitution. When we say they are weakening the Constitution, it means they are weakening the people of this country, by taking away their rights,” she said.

She said that the Congress and its leaders like Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi and she are willing to fight to protect the Constitution till their last breath. “My brother is not here as he is not well. But he is fighting for the Constitution everyday. That is why the BJP is afraid of him,” she said.

“We should understand what is the meaning of the Constitution and what role it plays in our life. This contains all the rights that we have got. The fundamental rights, right to vote, to seek justice, it creates opportunities for equality and enables to fight for them. B.R. Ambedkar is our saviour as he drafted this document and ensured that it was implemented. That is why he is our saviour. We should all realise this,” she said.
