IIT Bombay has temporarily changed its hostel mess menu due to LPG shortage, cutting high gas-consuming dishes and suspending non-veg items.
Concerns are rising across India over the availability of cooking gas, as pressure mounts on LPG supplies nationwide. Amid this situation, institutions are taking precautionary steps to manage their resources. In line with this, IIT Bombay has introduced temporary changes to the hostel mess menu to conserve limited LPG stock while ensuring uninterrupted food service for students.
According to institute officials, the revised menu focuses on dishes that require less gas for preparation. Students living in hostels have been experiencing the new menu since March 14. The move reflects how even major institutions are adapting cautiously amid global uncertainties and fluctuating fuel availability.
As per the updated plan, only one vegetarian dish will now be served per meal. Non-vegetarian options have been temporarily suspended. In addition, cooking methods that consume high amounts of energy, such as deep frying and prolonged boiling, have been halted for the time being.
