Increase in PPAC charges for BRPL and BYPL consumers, AAP accuses BJP of favoring private players, opposition demands rollback.
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Monday attacked the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government over the increase in power purchase adjustment cost (PPAC), which will lead to higher bills for lakhs of consumers in the city from next month. The Opposition party demanded that the tariff be rolled back.
When reached for comment, the BJP did not respond.
AAP MLA Kuldeep Kumar accused the Delhi government of working in the interests of private players.
“A hike in PPAC will massively increase electricity bills. After coming to power by promising 300 units of free electricity, the BJP is now helping power companies profit by burdening the common man with the extra tariff,” Mr. Kumar said.
He added, “If the government proceeds with its plan to increase the tariff, AAP will strongly oppose it at every level. We will not allow Delhi’s poor to suffer from unaffordable electricity bills. Delhiites have seen the BJP’s true face — false promises and failed delivery. Before the Assembly poll, the BJP promised ₹2,500 for women and 300 units of free electricity. Till now, it hasn’t delivered either.”
The PPAC is a surcharge that increases or decreases depending on the prevailing prices of fuel, such as coal and gas, used in power generation. It is calculated and charged on the fixed and variable parts of the bill, depending on monthly consumption. These two components, along with some minor charges, comprise the total bill.
The Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission had earlier this month permitted discoms to recover costs linked to fuel price fluctuations during the third quarter of 2024-25.
