With overhead electrification work completed on the new broadgauge railway line, the Karaikal-Peralam section is ready for inspection by the Principal Chief Electrical Engineer (PCEE), Southern Railway- cum-Electrical Inspector to the Government of India.
The PCEE will inspect the 23.5-km line on May 20 accompanied by senior railway officials of the Southern Railway Construction Organisation and the Tiruchi Railway Division.
The Southern Railway Construction Organisation was entrusted with the task of constructing the new line between Karaikal and Peralam via Thirunallar in Tiruchi Railway Division.
Originally, a metre gauge line existed in this section. Train services were suspended nearly 40 years ago and the track was removed subsequently. The new track will now restore rail link between Karaikal and Peralam after a gap of four decades.
Railway sources said the overhead electrification was part of the Karaikal-Peralam line project. The electrification work was taken up simultaneously with the construction of a new broadgauge track. “All work connected with overhead electrification have been completed with the inspection by the PCEE scheduled on May 20,” the sources said.
An official communication regarding the inspection by the PCEE has been conveyed to the Tiruchi Railway Division as well. The sources said the PCEE will commence the inspection from Karaikal travelling on board a special train in the morning and conclude at Peralam in the afternoon. The top railway officer will conduct a speed trial run on board the special train that will be hauled by an electric locomotive from Peralam to Karaikal in the evening.
The inspection by the PCEE is to be done for energising the section ahead of the statutory inspection by the Commissioner of Railway Safety, Bengaluru. The issuance of a certificate by the PCEE is mandatory, the sources added.
