On Wednesday, two patients, who were being treated at Ballari's state-run medical college hospital's ICU ward, died allegedly due to power failure.

Karnataka Health Minister K Sudhakar assured action against the deaths of two ICU patients at a state-run medical institution, VIMS (Vijaynagar Institute of Medical Sciences), in Ballari. On Wednesday, Maula Hussein and Chettemma, who were being treated for their respective ailments, died allegedly due to power failure.

Condoling the deaths, the state health minister said, "After we get the probe report, we’ll make it public. If they were natural deaths or if the deaths were due to their illness, no action would be taken. But the government will take strict action if the deaths were due to any mistake or negligence. The deaths have pained me. I’ve held meetings and suggested measures to strengthen the health system in Ballari.”

"The incident that took place on the 14th was brought to my notice. B Sriramulu gave an answer on my behalf in the assembly. We have formed a committee so that the people of this state know the truth. The committee visited VIMS and found that two deaths occurred between 8:30 and 9:30," the minister said.

The first person, Hussein, died from suffering from kidney-related issues. His family was told that his condition was critical. In the report given by the district administration and the hospital, it is said that this person died due to bleeding in the brain.

The second person, 30-year-old Chettemma, died as she was admitted to the hospital after being bitten by a snake. When she was brought to the hospital, she was bleeding from her nose and mouth, as per sources.

Following the incident, the Opposition demanded the resignation of the state health minister and held him responsible for the two deaths at the government-run medical college hospital. CM Bommai, junking the demand, said that it was the job of the Opposition to seek Sudhakar's resignation. He also said that the Congress party had developed a tendency to politicise every issue.
