Varun Dhawan broke image in this film: Border 2 co-actor Paramvir Cheema I Exclusive
India Today
Paramvir Singh Cheema discussed the challenges of acting in Border 2 alongside legends and handling online trolling. He emphasises the film's message of unity and secularism amid social media controversies.
When Border 2 was announced, the internet did what it always does with anything sacred: it panicked, celebrated and pre-judged all at once. Reviving a 1997 war epic that has lived in India’s legacy for nearly three decades is not just a cinematic decision, it’s emotional territory. For Paramvir Singh Cheema that weight is impossible to ignore.
“I’m nervous because when you touch a film as big as Border, which is a cult classic, there’s pressure,” he tells India Today. “People wonder how they will perceive us, whether we will live up to expectations. In such a big star cast, will I be noticed? How will my performance look? What will the audience feel?”
The anxiety isn’t only about legacy, it’s about visibility. Sharing the frame with Sunny Deol, Suniel Shetty, Diljit Dosanjh, and Varun Dhawan is a dream for any actor, but it also comes with the fear of being lost in the crowd.
“They had such a massive cast, legends. I kept thinking, will I get space on screen? Will people notice me? Will this role give me recognition? Will I leave an impression?” he admits. Those doubts, however, were put to rest by director Anurag Singh. “He told me very clearly, I’m not calling you for two lines. It’s a solid part. I’ve seen your body of work, that’s why I’m taking you.”
Over the years, the actor has quietly built a reputation for picking projects that try to speak beyond entertainment, something he is now consciously leaning into. Be it Black Warrant, Tabbar, among others.
