Vaiko urges Union Ministers to intervene for safety of students from southern States stranded in Kashmir
Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) general secretary Vaiko has written to Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Home Minister Amit Shah, urging them to take immediate steps to evacuate students from the southern States, who are stranded in conflict zones in Jammu and Kashmir.
Pointing to the ongoing tensions between India and Pakistan, Mr. Vaiko said students from Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh, who have been staying in the hostels of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology in Srinagar, were in an insecure situation.
While local students have returned to their hometowns, around 120 students from other States are facing hardships, and their family members are worried about them. The Tamil Nadu government is ready to offer help in evacuating the students from the conflict zones, he said on Friday (May 9, 2025).
He appealed to the Centre to make arrangements at the earliest to safely evacuate the students from the hostels in Srinagar and send them back to their home States.

After being repeatedly disrupted for three consecutive days over issues ranging from the Governor’s address and alleged disrespect to the national anthem to demands for the resignation of the Excise Minister, among others, normalcy finally returned to the Legislative Council on Friday, with proceedings commencing.
