A special court on Friday sentenced a couple to death for filming and selling pornographic videos of minor children on the dark web in Uttar Pradesh's Chitrakoot six years ago. The verdict was delivered by the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) court in Banda after an extensive hearing, bringing a close to one of the region’s most disturbing child exploitation cases.
The convicts, Ram Bhavan, a junior engineer in the Irrigation Department, and his wife Durgavati, were found guilty under multiple provisions of the Indian Penal Code, the POCSO Act and the Information Technology Act.
Section 377 of the IPC was also invoked as the offences were committed before it was read down by the Supreme Court.
The court awarded capital punishment to both and directed the state and central governments to provide Rs 10 lakh each as financial assistance to the families of the identified victims.
The case was investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which arrested the couple in October 2020 following reports of child sexual abuse in Banda, Chitrakoot and nearby districts.
According to investigators, the accused targeted children aged between five and sixteen from their neighbourhood and extended circles, lured them, sexually abused them and recorded the acts using mobile phones and other electronic devices.

Amid preparations for an engagement and haldi ceremony in Maharashtra's Dhule district, an argument broke out between two groups over the printing of names on a wedding invitation card, during which three people were attacked with sharp weapons and killed. Three others were injured and are undergoing treatment.
