25-year-old Deepak Dhurve has confessed to killing his parents, younger brother and the family's pet cat in Betul district, but has not explained the motive behind the attack.
A 25-year-old mentally unstable man allegedly bludgeoned his father, mother and younger brother to death in Madhya Pradesh's Betul, police said.
The incident took place in Sawanga village and has left the entire area in shock. Police have arrested the accused, identified as Deepak Dhurve, and produced him before a court.
According to officials, the violence erupted on Wednesday night when the family was preparing dinner at home. The accused allegedly began assaulting his younger brother Dilip with an iron rod. When the parents rushed to intervene and tried to shield Dilip, they too were fatally attacked.
A five-year-old nephew who was also present in the room witnessed the entire incident. Relatives said the accused allegedly stepped on the child's face and left him, assuming he was dead, which ultimately saved the boy's life.
Dhurve, who is mentally unwell as per neighbours, beat to death his father Raju alias Hansu Dhurve (55), mother Kamalti Dhurve (40), and brother Dilip Dhurve (20), Superintendent of Police Virendra Kumar Jain said.
"Neighbours noticed something amiss as no one had come out of the house till afternoon. No one was answering the door either. When neighbours broke it down, they found Deepak sitting quietly near the three bodies as well as the carcass of a cat, which too may have been killed by him," he added.

Amid preparations for an engagement and haldi ceremony in Maharashtra's Dhule district, an argument broke out between two groups over the printing of names on a wedding invitation card, during which three people were attacked with sharp weapons and killed. Three others were injured and are undergoing treatment.
