Footage from the area showed some students climbing down from balconies to lower floors to escape the smoke.
Others remained trapped on upper levels until police and fire department teams reached the scene and began evacuations using ladders and emergency gear.
Fire engines quickly arrived and battled the flames while dense smoke billowed out of the building, prompting people in nearby shops and offices to rush outdoors.
