Two Telangana sub inspectors arrested for demanding ₹1 lakh bribe from a cybercrime victim they falsely accused.
What began as a complaint from a businessman who had lost ₹2 lakh to a cyber fraud, ended with two police officers allegedly turning the victim into an accused and demanding a bribe to spare him from arrest. The Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Monday (March 9, 2026) arrested two Armed Reserve (AR) sub inspectors posted at the Cyber Crime Police Station in the Malkajgiri Commissionerate for allegedly demanding and accepting ₹1 lakh from the businessman.
The accused were identified as Pramod Goud and Jatavath Babu Naik, both serving as Armed Reserve sub inspectors (SI) at the Cybercrime Police Station in L.B. Nagar. The victim, a 36-year-old businessman from Ramanthapur, approached the police after losing ₹2 lakh in an online fraud.
According to officials, the two officers allegedly turned the tables on the complainant and framed him as an accused in the case. An officer familiar with the investigation said the SIs then offered him a way out, telling him they would issue a notice under Section 35 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) instead of arresting him if he paid them ₹1 lakh. They also allegedly assured him that they would help facilitate a partial refund in the cyber fraud case.
Unwilling to pay the bribe and fearing illegal arrest, the businessman approached the Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB). Acting on the complaint, the ACB laid a trap and caught Jatavath Babu Naik while accepting ₹1 lakh on behalf of himself and Pramod Goud at L.B. Nagar x road. The tainted cash was recovered from his possession.
The ACB said that the two officers misused their official position to obtain undue advantage. Both were arrested and will be produced before the I Additional Special Judge for SPE and ACB cases at Nampally for judicial remand. The investigation is continuing.
The ACB has urged the public to report instances of bribery by public servants through its toll free number 1064 or through its official social media platforms, assuring that the identity of complainants would be kept confidential.
