
Transplantation to save 262 trees on Avinashi-Mettupalayam Road in Coimbatore from axing

Over 260 trees Avinashi – Mettupalayam Road in Coimbatore district to be transplanted, by saving them from axing for widening works.
A total of 262 trees located in the Coimbatore district stretch of Avinashi – Mettupalayam Road, which is going to be developed into a four-lane, are expected to grow elsewhere through transplantation.
The District Green Committee headed by District Collector Pavankumar G. Giriyappanavar is mooting transplantation of the 262 native trees, by saving from axing.
Officials in the know of the works said that a total of 1,604 trees were found as obstruction for the widening works in the 25.2-km stretch of the road in Coimbatore district.
The total distance of the road between Avinashi in Tiruppur district and Mettupalayam in Coimbatore district is 38.2 km and around 470 trees were felled in the 13-km stretch in Tiruppur district.
Of the 1,604 trees identified as obstructions for widening works in Coimbatore district, 1,342 would be felled and the remaining would be transplanted, they said.
Coimbatore-based non-governmental organisation Green Care, which is engaged in protecting trees and transplanting them, has stepped in to assist the State Highways Department for their transplantation.
Green Care founder K. Syed, also a member of the District Green Committee, said field inspections on behalf of the committee were carried out from December 15.
