Banking services remained affected for the second consecutive day
Commuters heaved a sigh of relief on Tuesday as the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation Limited (TNSTC) buses that were off the roads on Monday, due to the two-day nationwide strike called by various trade unions, were back on roads.
While 90% of the total buses were operated in the morning, all the buses were back in service by afternoon as normalcy was restored. In the hilly areas of Talavadi, Bargur and Kadambur, buses were operated from the morning.
But, banking services remained affected for the second consecutive day as most of the staff in over 200 branches of nationalised banks took part in the strike, affecting cheque clearance and other basic services.
Services are expected to be normal on Wednesday and Thursday, as banks would remain closed from April 1 to 3. Services in post offices were also affected due to the strike. Bank associations demanded scrapping of four labour codes and restoration of the old pension scheme.
Meanwhile, members of various trade unions staged a demonstration in the city against the policies of the Central government. They raised slogans against the government’s privatisation and monetisation plans for public sector undertakings and assets.
