Tata Sierra hits 1 lakh bookings, production to increase
India Today
Tata Motors' Sierra SUV has crossed one lakh bookings, prompting the automaker to shift focus from demand generation to ramping up production amid tight capacity and supplier constraints nationwide demand.
Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles has crossed a significant milestone with its newly launched SUV, the Sierra, recording over one lakh bookings since opening order books. With demand firmly established, the company has now shifted its attention from customer acquisition to execution on the supply side, as it works to scale up production amid industry-wide capacity constraints.
Confirming the development during a media interaction following Tata Motors’ Q3 FY26 results, Shailesh Chandra, Managing Director and CEO of Tata Motors PV, said the pace of bookings has rendered headline numbers secondary. "We announced 70,000 bookings on day one, and since then, orders have continued to come in. At this stage, the focus is not demand, it’s supply," he said, adding that bookings have moved well into six-digit territory.
The Sierra is currently in the production ramp-up phase, with Tata Motors increasing output gradually in coordination with its supplier ecosystem. According to Chandra, certain component categories, particularly castings and select powertrain parts remain under pressure, limiting the speed at which volumes can be expanded.
"We are ramping up month by month. There are challenges at the supplier end, but we are working closely with them to unlock additional supplies," he noted.
The situation is further complicated by the fact that the Sierra shares its production facility with the Nexon, another high-volume model. As a result, Tata Motors is balancing output between the two SUVs while simultaneously investing in supplier capacity expansion and incremental plant optimisation.
Tata Motors is reportedly targeting Sierra production of around 15,000 units per month by March 2026, translating into annualised volumes exceeding 1.5 lakh units.
