Anthropic, the US-based AI startup that walked away from a Pentagon deal over unrestricted AI use, is now looking to hire an expert in chemical weapons. While this has sparked some confusion on social media, the Dario Amodei-led firm is not changing its stance when it comes to AI and weapons, but rather, wants to formulate a clear policy in this area.
According to Anthropic’s job posting, the role will revolve around “how AI systems handle sensitive chemical and explosives information.” The policy manager will be working with AI safety researchers while “tackling critical problems in preventing catastrophic misuse.”
Contrary to some interpretations on social media, the company is not recruiting experts to develop such weapons. Instead, it wants to bring an expert who can help build a clear policy against the use of its systems for such weapons.
Anthropic’s fallout with the Pentagon seemed to have opened a pandora’s box when it comes to the use of AI and autonomous weapons. While the US military insisted that it was not going to use AI for such a purpose, Anthropic remained unconvinced.
Anthropic’s Claude AI will be replaced by OpenAI’s models from classified US military networks within the next six months. However, Claude is still being used by the Pentagon for its strikes on Iran. As per reports, Claude has been integrated into Palantir’s Maven system for target selection and other operations.
The job posting states that the policy manager will handle various responsibilities. This includes building evaluation methods that can measure an AI model’s capabilities related to chemical weapons and explosives, as well as developing strategies to mitigate potential misuse.
