Sony to stop making TVs? Deal worth Rs 8,300 crore with TCL moving ahead

Sony will hand over most of its TV manufacturing to TCL in a deal likely worth Rs 8,300 crore, but the Bravia brand will live on. Consumers can expect familiar quality, even if the production behind the scenes changes. Here is everything you need to know.

Sony, a name that has long been associated with premium televisions, is reportedly close to selling a majority stake in its home entertainment business to Chinese electronics giant TCL. Sources familiar with the matter told Bloomberg that the deal could be valued at around Rs 8,300 crore ($1 billion), and an official announcement might come later this month. While talks are in advanced stages, a final agreement has not yet been signed.

The discussions follow an earlier memorandum of understanding between the two companies announced in January, in which Sony and TCL outlined plans for a joint venture that would include Sony’s Bravia TV brand. Under the proposed arrangement, TCL would hold 51 per cent of the venture, giving it operational control, while Sony would retain a 49 per cent stake. The joint venture is expected to begin operations in April 2027, subject to regulatory and contractual approvals.

At first glance, the news may raise concerns for consumers about whether this means the end of Sony-branded TVs. The answer is no. Bravia televisions will continue to appear on store shelves, carrying the same Sony logo that has stood for quality and reliability for over two decades. The key difference is that TCL will now manage production and supply chain operations, using its own display technology. In essence, while the brand remains, the way these TVs are made is changing.

For years, a Sony TV in the living room symbolised strong picture quality, clear sound, and thoughtful engineering. From the Trinitron era to the latest OLED and LCD models, Sony has built its reputation by focusing on accuracy in colour, motion handling, and sound tuning, often with professional filmmakers in mind. Future TVs will continue to offer these features, but production will now leverage TCL’s manufacturing scale and technological expertise.

Sony's latest strategic decision comes at a time when the global television market has become fiercely competitive. Companies like Samsung, LG, TCL, and Hisense are battling for volume, pricing, and shelf space. Sony has already stepped back from producing its own panels and increasingly relies on suppliers, which makes it harder to compete with high-volume manufacturers. TCL, by contrast, has invested heavily in panel production and supply chain control, giving it the ability to scale efficiently and manage costs.
