Chief Minister M.K. Stalin unveiled the foundation for the 27-storey tower on Friday (February 14, 2025) via video conferencing. The construction is set to begin shortly and will be completed in about 30 months.
The idea to build a ‘Central Square’ for the city, much like London’s Trafalgar Square or New York’s Time Square, and also to construct a massive tower as part of it came about nearly eight years ago.
Sprawling over 14,280 sq. metres, the Central Square, whose height is 120 metres, is built at an estimated cost of ₹546.99 crore. This is the first project implemented by the Chennai Metro Rail Asset Management Limited (CMAML), an SPV of the Chennai Metro Rail Limited and Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO).
Chennai Metro Rail has completed the basement with parking, whose cost is ₹197 crore, and it can accommodate 586 cars and 1,652 two-wheelers on four floors. The cost of constructing the tower is ₹350 crore.
Renaatus Projects has been given the contract for building the tower. The company will begin the work on the 27-storey tower shortly, sources said. Retail and multiplex will come up on the first four floors, followed by offices up to 24 floors. The 27th floor has been dedicated for a service area. On the last two floors, Chennai Metro Rail has planned to build hotels.
As several public transport modes are available at this junction — Chennai Central Railway station, MRTS, suburban rail, and Chennai Metro Rail station — commuting back and forth to the Central Square will be convenient for the public, CMRL officials said.
