
Stalin announces special units for Chennai police

Chief Minister M K Stalin announces welfare projects and upgrades for Tamil Nadu police, including new units and patrol vehicles.
Chief Minister M K Stalin announced a slew of welfare and development projects for the Tamil Nadu police on Tuesday.
He made the announcements while replying to the debate on the demand for grants for the police department in the Assembly.
Mr. Stalin said that the Greater Chennai Police would get three new units - Organised Crime Cell, Anti-Narcotics Intelligence Unit and Social Media investigation Unit - at a total cost of ₹84 lakh. A new All Women Police Station would be set up at Arumbakkam range in the city. Police out-posts would be established at the Tamil Nadu Government Multi Speciality Hospital at Omandurar and the Periyar Government Hospital in Perambur. A special wing to monitor the activity in the ‘Dark Web’ would come up at the police headquarters here at a cost of ₹2.10 crore. The project would be implemented over a period of three years.
Mr. Stalin announced allocation of 80 pink patrol vehicles for city commissionerates, except Chennai as an additional force to ensure safety of women. The vehicles would be procured at a cost of ₹12 crore.
As regards police welfare, a new scheme for assured career progression was announced. In the new upgradation programme, a Grade-II police constable would be promoted to Grade-1 in 10 years and then to the rank of head constable in 3 years instead of the existing 5 years. After putting in 10 years as head constable, he/she would be promoted as Special Sub-Inspector.
‘Magizhchi’, a police well-being programme covering police personnel and their family members, that has successfully completed courses in Chennai, Madurai and Tiruvarur, would be extended to the West Zone. A sum of ₹47 lakh was allocated for the purpose.
An integrated master control room with advanced communication gadgets would be established for the Government Railway Police here for better coordination with railway police establishments across the State and other State police. A bomb detection and disposal squad and sniffer dog unit was also sanctioned.
