Specific learning disability: Experts call for evidence-based practices

The Department of Clinical Psychology at the All India Institute of Speech and Hearing (AIISH) organised a national seminar and Continuing Rehabilitation Education (CRE) event on “Current trends and emerging challenges in the assessment and management of specific learning disability (SLD)” here recently. The two-day event brought together leading professionals, academicians, and researchers.

The two-day event brought together leading professionals, academicians, and researchers.
Dr. Roopesh B.N, consultant, Child and Adolescent Unit, National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS), Bengaluru inaugurated the event in the presence of Prof. M. Pushpavathi, Director, AIISH. Dr. Roopesh appreciated the Department for addressing such a pertinent and clinically significant topic in a comprehensive manner.
Dr. Rushi, Head, Department of Psychology, and the organising chairperson, AIISH and Ms. Procheta Mahanta, lecturer in the Department of Clinical Psychology conducted the seminar.
In her welcome address, Dr. Rushi said the landscape of SLD assessment and management is rapidly transforming with evolving diagnostic frameworks, advances in neuropsychological assessment, inclusive education policies, and technological innovations. She emphasised that professionals must respond to emerging challenges such as differential diagnosis, comorbidities, socio-cultural factors, policy implementation, and accessibility of services. “Our responsibility is not merely to diagnose, but to empower, enable, and transform lives,” she said.
Eminent resource persons delivered lectures and took part in interactive sessions, underscoring the importance of early identification, interdisciplinary collaboration, and evidence-based interventions to improve outcomes for individuals with SLD.

Hundreds of unemployed youth, including college students, participated in the job fair organised by the Shivamogga district administration and Zilla Panchayat on Friday. The administration invited over 30 companies that offered job opportunities to youth, including those who had failed in SSLC and PUC.
