Security is heightened for Prime Minister Modi's visit to Puducherry ahead of crucial Assembly polls, with significant announcements expected.
Ahead of the 2026 Assembly polls in the Union Territory, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will make a crucial visit to Puducherry on Sunday under the tight security cover provided by territorial police and law enforcement agencies of the Central government.
As per details available with government agencies in Puducherry, Mr. Modi will reach Puducherry airport from Chennai around noon. He will participate in an-hour-long government programme at the helipad near the airport and return to Chennai around 1.30 p.m. The airport and the programme venue at Lawspet helipad have already come under surveillance of the police and the agencies entrusted with the Prime Minister’s security.
“The PM’s security liaison team has already reached Puducherry. Surveillance across the region has been stepped up with the deployment of several police personnel, including plainclothesmen. Various security agencies are involved in the surveillance and monitoring,” said a police officer.
Hundreds of policemen will be deployed on the day of Prime Minister’s arrival for crowd and traffic management. Though Mr. Modi’s visit was purely official, considering the large mobilisation of workers from across Puducherry by the ruling BJP, the police are working out a traffic management plan for the day. Around 4,000 newly-recruited government staff and over 1,000 youth selected by private companies at a recent job fair held at Lawspet are also expected to attend the programme.
Based on a request made by Superintendent of Police (Security), Puducherry, District Collector has already declared areas in Puducherry and Oulgaret Municipalities as ‘No Fly Zone’ prohibiting flying of aviation devices including UAV, drones, etc., on Sunday.
“Any person violating the order will be liable for penal action under the provisions of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita and other relevant provisions of law,” the Collector said in the order.
