The Sangeethabhushan Award 2026 instituted in memory of Vellinezhi Subramania Bhagavathar was given away to Carnatic vocalist Mathangi Satyamurthy at a function held at Olappamanna Mana at Vellinezhi near here on Sunday (January 25, 2026) evening.

The event marked the commemoration of Subramania Bhagavathar, one of the foremost disciples of the legendary Carnatic musician Chembai Vaidyanatha Bhagavathar, and the anniversary celebrations of Sadgurukulam Music School, Vellinezhi.

Subramania Bhagavathar’s son P.S. Raman gave away the award. Renowned musician Mannoor M.P. Rajakumaranunni commemorated Subramania Bhagavathar. Sanskrit scholar and former registrar of Kannur University K.H. Subramanian inaugurated the function.

Vellinezhi Subramanyam, who received the Guru Ratna Award of the Sharjah-based Samagana Sangeetha Sabha and the Guru Pooja Award of the Kshetra Kala Academy, and Bharadwaj Subramanyam, who received the M.S. Subbulakshmi Fellowship instituted by the Mumbai Shanmukhananda Sangeetha Sabha, were also felicitated at the function.

Ms. Satyamurthy presented a Carnatic vocal concert on the occasion. Last year’s Sangeethabhushan Award was conferred on mridangam exponent Yella Venkateswara Rao.
