NHAI begins partial removal of the median at TVS Tollgate bus stop to alleviate traffic congestion and improve vehicle flow.
With the TVS Tollgate Junction in the city witnessing severe traffic congestion, the NHAI concessionaire maintaining the Tiruchi-Padalur NH section has started partially removing the concrete road median in front of the bus stop on the service road leading towards the Tiruchi-Chennai Bypass Road.
The move is expected to ease the movement of the vehicles. Ever since the opening of the Kalaignar Integrated Bus Stand at Panjapur, several passengers prefer to board the buses to Thanjavur and other destinations at the TVS Tollgate bus stop.
But traffic snarls have become frequent as buses stop to pick up or drop passengers along the narrow service roads. The problem is acute as the bus halts are situated close to the intersection.
Motorists taking a left turn or going straight ahead towards the Pudukottai Road and those taking a turn towards the service road leading to the national highway often get stuck in traffic pile ups as the buses try to make their way towards the bus stop.
Over the past few days, the concrete road median over a drainage canal partially is being removed by the concessionaire apparently based on a request from the city police so as to create more space for the buses moving towards the bus stop and vehicles headed towards the service road. the median is being removed for about 40 metres. The work would be completed within a week to 10 days, sources said.
Terming it as a temporary solution, P.Ayyarappan, president, Road Users Welfare Association, said permanent measures to improve the road furniture and infrastructure should be made at the TVS Tollgate and Mannarpuram junctions in view of the significant rise in the number of buses halting there, after the opening of the IBT.
