Police dig grave using JCB, bury girl who died after molestation, assault in Lakhimpur Kheri

The Uttar Pradesh Police on Saturday dug a grave using a JCB and buried a woman who died after molestation and assault at the hands of two youth in Lakhimpur Kheri.
After the alleged rape-murder of two sisters, another incident rocked Uttar Pradesh's Lakhimpur Kheri. An 18-year-old who died after allegedly being molested and beaten up by two youths was buried near her home in a grave dug using a JCB by the police.
On September 17, after completing the post-mortem proceedings, the police called in a JCB to dig a grave and bury the girl in the presence of her family, near her home, amid heavy security to avoid a communal flare-up.
The girl was allegedly molested and beaten up by two youths, Karimuddin and Yusuf, on September 12. The cause of death could not be ascertained, and the police are awaiting the autopsy report.
According to the girl's family, the accused were released by the police after registering an assault case. The police recorded the girl's statement, but the family alleged that no medical tests were done and no female cop was present when the statement was recorded.
The condition of the girl deteriorated on September 16, following which she was admitted to an ICU. She soon succumbed to her injuries.
On Saturday, when the body arrived after the post-mortem proceedings, the police feared a communal flare-up and decided to bury her. Earlier, the girl's family had refused to give consent to a post-mortem, alleging negligence on the part of the police.
Vimal Gautam, station in-charge at Bhira police station, told India Today that a JCB had to be called since it was raining and a grave could not have been dug using a shovel.
