A report from the Wildlife Institute of India has documented over 350 plant, animal, and insect species on the IIT Roorkee campus.
IIT Roorkee, was established in 1847 AD as the first engineering college of the British Empire. On the 21st of September 2001, the university was declared an institute of national importance by passing a bill in the parliament, thereby changing its status from University of Roorkee to the Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee.
