Opposition leader Sajith Premadasa accepts invite to form govt in Sri Lanka

Opposition leader Sajith Premadasa said he has accepted the invitation from President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to form interm goverment in Sri Lanka, subject to certain conditions.
Sri Lanka's Leader of Opposition, Sajith Premadasa wrote an open letter to President Gotabaya Rajapaksa saying he is ready to assume the office of Prime Minister.
Premadasa said the Samagi Jana Balawegaya-led Opposition is willing to form a new interim government subject to four conditions.
Premadasa said in order to accept the invite, President Gotabaya Rajapaksa must resign within a stipulated time period. He put forward these four conditions:
He claimed that the president must call for parliamentary elections to give the people an opportunity to elect a new stable government and to establish the rule of law.
In a late night address, Sri Lanka's embattled President Gotabaya Rajapaksa had said he would appoint a new prime minister and a young cabinet this week which would introduce constitutional reforms.
The statement came amid continuing protests over the nation's worst economic crisis that ousted his elder brother Mahinda Rajapaksa, who is under protection at a naval base in the wake of violent attacks on his aides.
