The clarification comes days after a US submarine sank an Iranian warship in the Indian Ocean off Sri Lanka on March 4, killing at least 87 sailors.
The government has dismissed claims circulating from Pakistani sources that India shared the location of the Iranian naval vessel IRIS Dena with Israel, calling them part of a coordinated disinformation campaign. The clarification comes days after the Iranian warship was sunk by a US submarine in the Indian Ocean off Sri Lanka on March 4, an attack that killed at least 87 sailors.
A statement said the allegations were spread through manipulated videos and false narratives designed to undermine India’s credibility.
The government’s Press Information Bureau fact-check unit flagged a viral clip as a deepfake that falsely showed Army chief Upendra Dwivedi claiming India had informed Israel about the ship’s location.
"Deepfake Video Alert," PIB Fact Check posted, warning that propaganda accounts were circulating an AI-generated video to mislead viewers.
"Beware! This is an AI-generated deepfake video shared to mislead the public," it said, adding that General Dwivedi "has made no such statement".
The government reiterated that the narrative claiming India provided intelligence to Israel about the Iranian ship’s movements was "baseless".
