
LPG tanker overturns near Katapady, Mangaluru-Udupi traffic diverted amid gas leak

LPG tanker accident near Katapady disrupts Mangaluru-Udupi traffic on NH66; following gas leak, alternate routes in place for commuter safety.
The movement of vehicles between Mangaluru and Udupi stretch of NH66 was affected following leakage of gas from an LPG filled tanker that overturned in Katapady, in the outskirts of Udupi town, on Monday (March 16, 2026).
The driver of the gas tanker, which belongs to HPCL, lost control over the vehicle. Soon after it overturned, gas started to leak from the vehicle. HPCL officials have been called to the spot to arrest the leakage and move aside the tanker. It is likely to take about four hours to complete the work.

In an order on March 16, Udupi Deputy Commissioner T.K. Swaroopa said, keeping commuter safety in mind, vehicles will be redirected to alternate routes till around 8 p.m. Vehicles going to Udupi from Mangaluru have to move either on Shirva-Moodubelle-Manipura route or on the Padubidri-Belman-Shirva route.
Vehicles from Udupi to Mangaluru have to move on the Manipal-Manipura-Moodubelle-Shirva-Kaup route. The vehicles can also move on Manipal-Shirva-Belman-Padubidri route too, she said in the order.
