The campus of Kotak Primary School resonated with the sounds of Christmas cheer with the All India Anglo-Indian Association (AIAIA) Visakhapatnam chapter organising its first Christmas celebration of the year last weekend. With twinkling lights and a community spirit, the event brought together Anglo-Indian families and well-wishers for a joyous occasion.
Sharing insights into the unique Christmas traditions of the Anglo-Indian community in Visakhapatnam, Freddy Pariera, the association’s president says, “For us, Christmas is not just a festival; it’s a way to strengthen our bonds with family and friends.”
The celebrations commenced with a delightful children’s event at Kotak Primary School, where the young ones participated in games, Christmas tree decoration, and gift exchanges with Santa Claus making a special appearance. The cheer will be carried forward with the Christmas Ball to be held at Kashyap Hall, Seethammadhara, on December 25. With live music, dancing, and festive camaraderie, the ball remains a cherished tradition for the community. This year, Goan artistes Tammy and Roy will be performing at the ball.
Adding to the festive spirit, carol singers from the community bring joy to the homes of their families and friends the days preceding Christmas. “It’s a heart-warming tradition where we visit families and friends, singing carols, sharing the joy of the season,” said Freddy. Hosts welcomed the singers with an assortment of home-made baked goods and cookies.
The celebrations culminate on Christmas day with a grand dinner with traditional Anglo-Indian dishes like coconut rice and ball curry, rose cookies, and home-made wines, bringing the community together for a feast that blends tradition and flavour. “Food is an integral part of Christmas. Every Anglo-Indian home has its unique recipes, passed down generations,” Freddy adds.
