Hong Kong man pays Rs 3 lakh to toy store after son breaks Teletubby statue

The incident happened at a toy shop in Langham Place shopping mall in the Mongkok district of Hong Kong.
A Hong Kong man had to cough up huge compensation for a Teletubby statue that his son accidentally knocked over and broke. The man identified as Cheng informed that his son was wrongly accused of the damage and criticised the shop’s staff for asking him to pay the sum. However, in the end, Cheng had to pay for the statue.
The incident happened at a toy shop in Langham Place shopping mall in the Mongkok district of Hong Kong. According to DailyMail, Cheng had stepped out to receive a call and heard a loud crash inside the toy store. He went inside to find his son standing ‘motionlessly’ and staring at a broken golden statue of a Teletubby.
“My son was so terrified after the incident that he had to skip school. He asked me why the sculpture looked scary,” Cheng told a local news portal. After the incident, he had to pay $33,600 (Rs 3,29,926 approximately).
A Facebook user shared photos of the incident as well.
After Cheng had already paid for the damage, he found out in the CCTV footage that his son did not ‘kick’ the statue but had accidentally leaned on it, resulting in the incident. According to DailyMail, Cheng had also asked for a refund of the money he paid but the shop owners, KK Plus, said that the compensation was ‘mutually agreed upon’.
The incident has sparked a debate on social media, with one section of the internet supporting Cheng and rebuking the store for falsely ripping him off. However, another section pointed out that the father should have kept a close look at the child.
