Bishop emphasizes farmers as nature protectors during cleanliness drive on Thamarassery Ghat Road for diocese anniversary.
Farmers are not exploiters of nature, but they are its protectors, Mar Remigiose Inchananiyil, Bishop of the Thamarassery Diocese of the Syro-Malabar Church, has said.
He was opening a cleanliness drive on the Thamarassery Ghat Road, organised by the diocese to mark its 40th anniversary celebrations, on Saturday (May 10). Mr. Inchananiyil pointed out that those who accused farmers of exploiting nature should see the number of those who have reached the Ghat Road early in the morning to participate in the drive. He said that all the waste on Ghat Road and across the State was generated by people. The piling up of waste in public had become an embarrassing fact for Kerala, he added.
According to sources, a large number of people, including those from the families of settler farmers, participated in the drive and cleared waste from Adivaram in Puthuppady to Lakkidi in Wayanad. The plastic waste and glass bottles were procured by the Puthuppady grama panchayat authorities for disposal. The diocese is also planning to implement a scheme to collect segregated waste from the houses of its members.
