Doctors offer essential tips for maintaining health post-menopause, stressing awareness and proactive care for women's well-being.
Doctors stress the need for open discussions on menopause and women’s health at this stage of life, noting that this topic is often overlooked in India.
They were speaking at a webinar on post-menopausal health, held as part of The Hindu’s Wellness Series on FridayMarch 6, 2026, jointly presented with Kauvery Hospital, to mark International Women’s Day.
The doctors said that until women became fully aware of the physiological changes inside their bodies, they would not be able to differentiate between what is normal and abnormal, and seek medical attention.
“With an increase in life expectancy, women now live 30 to 40 years after menopause, but they stop coming to the hospital for screenings,” said N. Suchitra, head of department and senior consultant, obstetrics & gynaecology, IVF and Fertility, Maa Kauvery, Tiruchi.
She listed five points every post-menopausal woman should know: bleeding after menopause is not normal and needs to be evaluated, vaginal dryness is treatable, urinary incontinence can be minimised with Kegel (pelvic strengthening) exercises, hormone therapy should be taken only on prescription, and regular health check-ups are crucial.
V. Sundari, consultant family physician, Kauvery Hospital, Tirunelveli, explained the importance of a good calcium-rich diet, maintaining an optimal weight, ensuring adequate vitamin D levels and exercising for bone health.
