Coimbatore gang-rape case leads to conviction in just 125 days, showcasing swift police investigation and thorough evidence collection.
The probe into the gang-rape case was a challenge for the investigating team as the Chief Minister had instructed the police to submit the chargesheet within a month.
Coimbatore City Police Commissioner N. Kannan, who addressed the media on Saturday evening (March 7, 2026), said the police managed to trace and arrest the accused within 24 hours.
The investigating team gathered vital evidence with the support of the scientific team, traced witnesses, collected surveillance camera visuals and digital evidence such as mobile tower locations and call detail records (CDR) of the required persons within a short period.
Forensic serology reports and DNA analysis played vital roles in corroborating the crimes committed by the accused. The police submitted the chargesheet on December 1, 2025 and the supplementary chargesheet on January 8, 2026. The trial started in the case on February 2, which was completed on February 23. A total of 72 prosecution witnesses were examined, including the survivor and her boyfriend.
“The case was investigated in such a manner, ensuring that the culprits remain in prison for the rest of their lives,” said Mr. Kannan.
Additionally, the police stated that they have secured a prime suspect in connection with the murder of an 82-year-old woman in a gated community in the city on Friday (March 6, 2026).
