Congress MP from Tamil Nadu Jothimani was hospitalised on Saturday, mere days after alleging that she was “brutally assaulted” by Delhi Police personnel while protesting against party leader Rahul Gandhi’s questioning by the Enforcement Directorate.
Senior Congress leader and Lok Sabha MP Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury and his wife rushed Jothimani to Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital in the national capital after she complained of high fever and severe body pain.
Earlier this week, Jothimani had written to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla asking that privilege proceedings be initiated against the Delhi Police for allegedly manhandling her and other party colleagues while they were holding peaceful protests at the Congress headquarters. A video of the incident had previously gone viral.
“They [Delhi Police] had brutally assaulted us and tore my clothes and committed police excess. They detained us illegally and also did not even provide water to drink for around 1.30 hours in the scorching heat,” she wrote in her letter to the Speaker.
Congress MP Shashi Tharoor had also shared a video of Jothimani on Twitter, in which she alleged that the Delhi Police personnel tore her clothes and carried her like a criminal in a bus along with other women protesters.
"This is outrageous in any democracy. To deal with a woman protestor like this violates every Indian standard of decency, but to do it to a LokSabha MP is a new low. I condemn the conduct of the @DelhiPolice and demand accountability. speaker @ombirlakota please act!," Tharoor said in a caption accompanying the video.

The matter pertains to a petition filed by one Nikhil Kumar Punia, who was born into an upper-caste Hindu family but supposedly converted to Buddhism later. He, along with another General Category candidate, has sought minority reservation benefits for admission to a Buddhist medical college on grounds of their purported conversion.

Energy disruption due to the war in the Middle East has exposed India's dependence on imported gas. It has prompted a policy shift mandating a switch from LPG to piped natural gas (PNG) where available. With supply constraints looming, the government is fast-tracking pipelines and pushing a nationwide transition to strengthen energy security.
