Chennai Police arrests two women, including mother, for selling 5-day-old baby

Two women, including the mother of a 5-day-old infant, were arrested by the Mappedu Police in Tamil Nadu’s Chennai for trying to traffic the child. The mother had sold it to the other accused for a sum of Rs 5,000.

Chennai Police arrested two women, including the mother of a five-day-old boy, on Tuesday, May 10, for trying to traffic the infant. The other accused had purchased the baby from the mother by paying Rs 5,000. The incident occurred in Mappedu, Selaiyur, on the outskirts of Chennai city.

According to the police, the mother was a sanitary worker while her husband was a day labourer. They had two other children and this was their third one, reported the New Indian Express.

The mother told the police that due to the couple’s own poor economic condition, they were finding it difficult to raise two children. “The newborn only added to our burden,” she said.

So, the mother decided to sell the newborn to her colleague, who told police that she bought the child for her brother, who was childless even after 10 years of marriage.

The incident came to light only when the mother’s relatives noticed that the infant was missing. The relatives lodged a complaint with the police, who investigated the issue and arrested the two women.

Police have said that further investigations are going on.
