A 37-year-old man allegedly killed his 65-year-old mother following a dispute over cooking bitter gourd in Maharashtra’s Chandrapur district, police said.
The incident took place in Dongargaon village under Mul tehsil. The victim has been identified as Sumitra Petkule (65), while the accused, Jagdish Petkule (37), has been arrested.
According to police, Jagdish was addicted to alcohol. His wife had left home two months ago, after which he had been living with his mother. On the night of the incident, he returned home in an inebriated state and began arguing with his mother over cooking bitter gourd, a dish he did not like.
The argument soon escalated, and Jagdish allegedly assaulted his mother brutally with kicks and punches. The attack proved fatal, and Sumitra Petkule died on the spot.
After the incident, the accused reportedly roamed around the village and told people that he had killed his mother. However, villagers ignored him as he was drunk. When they later grew suspicious, they informed the police.
Police from Mul police station reached the spot and arrested the accused. Inspector Vijay Rathod said the murder occurred following a dispute over the bitter gourd dish. Police have registered a case and are conducting further investigation.
