Chennai Police arrests former ABVP leader for urinating at elderly woman’s door

Chennai Police has arrested former ABVP leader Dr Subbiah Shanmugam for harassing an elderly woman and urinating in front of her house.
Former Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) national president Dr Subbiah Shanmugam has been arrested by the Chennai police for allegedly harassing an elderly woman neighbour by urinating near the entrance of her home and throwing rubbish outside her house.
The alleged incident took place in July 2020, following a disagreement between Subbiah and the woman over a parking lot. The victim, who is a widow living alone, in her complaint stated that following the argument, she would often find garbage dumped outside her place. Her family installed a CCTV to capture the culprit.
The woman, in her complaint, attached CCTV footage and some photos that purportedly show Subbiah Shanmugam urinating in front of her house. The complaint was filed at the Adambakkam Police Station on July 11, 2020.
Later, the woman withdrew the complaint allegedly due to external pressure. However, the police continued the investigation as an FIR has been filed.
Notably, the police filed an FIR nearly two weeks after receiving the complaint. Subbiah was booked under section 271 (disobedience to quarantine rule) and section 427 (mischief causing damage) of the Indian Penal Code and under the Tamil Nadu Prevention of Women Harassment Act.
Subbiah, who was the former ABVP president, also held the post of head of the Department of Surgical Oncology in Kilpauk Medical College during the time of the complaint.
Just months after the alleged incident, Subbiah was appointed as a board member of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Madurai in October 2020.
