CBI says R.G. Kar case not gang rape, to continue probe on ‘conspiracy, cover-up, evidence destruction’

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which has been probing the rape and murder of an on-duty doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, told the Calcutta High Court on Friday (March 28, 2025) that the incident was not a case of gang rape.

CBI’s Deputy Solicitor General Rajdeep Majumder told Justice Tirthankar Ghosh on Friday (March 28, 2025) that based on its investigation and the opinion of the board of medical experts, the agency has concluded that the August 7, 2024 incident was not an instance of gang rape. These developments took place during the hearing of a petition by the victim’s parents for further investigation into the case.

“All forensic opinion has been taken. All available DNA at the scene of the crime was examined. That was sent to the forensic experts... A medical board of 14 doctors was formed from different parts of the country, including gynaecologists, orthopaedics, general surgeons, DNA experts, and other experts... We have investigated everything; all nurses, all doctors, all persons associated with the hospital have been examined...all aspects have been covered by the investigating agency,” the CBI counsel said in court.

The CBI on Friday (March 28, 2025) also submitted a status report related to the ongoing investigation to the court and said it is currently probing whether there is a “greater conspiracy to commit this crime and hush up the matter” and the destruction of evidence.

“The investigation is going on on a day-to-day basis. A voluminous document has been collected. Phone numbers, all call data details of whoever was present there, everything is being scrutinised by the agency,” the CBI counsel said.

On being asked for clarification by Justice Ghosh, the CBI counsel reiterated that, according to the investigation so far, the incident involved only one person.

It is worth noting that on January 18 this year, the Additional District and Sessions Court, Sealdah convicted Sanjay Roy of the doctor’s rape and murder. On January 20, Mr. Roy, a former civic police volunteer, was sentenced to life imprisonment.
