National Science Day was celebrated by colleges with a host of activities to encourage innovation and research this week. Shrimati Indira Gandhi College celebrated organised ‘Science Sangamam – Young Innovators Science Mela’ and a special scientists’ conclave to observe the day.
S.R. Prabagaran, visiting scientist – UCSC, USA and professor of Biotechnology, Bharathiar University, Coimbatore, Karthika Venkatesan, Scientist–E/Joint Director, Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), Bengaluru, and B. Selvamukilan, senior scientist, M. S. Swaminathan Research Foundation, Chennai, were the resource persons. The speakers emphasised on the need for scientific temper, research ethics, and collaborative innovation to achieve sustainable growth.
The Department of Science and Humanities, Saranathan College of Engineering, organised a programme titled “Science and technology for sustainable development” to celebrate the day. In his inaugural address, S. Sudhakar, Scientist F, Central Electrochemical Research Institute (CECRI), spoke on the responsible use of mobile phones in daily life. The speaker discussed the importance and applications of lithium-ion batteries in modern technology.
At the Arignar Anna Government Arts College in Musiri, the PG and Research Department of Physics, functioning under the Sir C.V. Raman Club of Physics, held an inter-departmental science carnival as part of the National Science Day celebrations.
In his keynote address, V. Karunakaran, associate professor of Physics, Government Arts College, Ariyalur, spoke on recent developments in science and encouraged students to pursue higher education and research-oriented careers. Several competitions including quiz, poster presentation, working model exhibition, and scientific demonstrations were conducted as part of the Science Carnival.
An all-terrain off-highway vehicle designed to deliver essential medicines and food supplies to army personnel, a seismic alarm system to alert household occupants and a hovercraft model demonstrating friction-less movement were among the notable exhibits of a student science exhibition organised by Department of Physics of J.J. College of Engineering and Technology, Sowdambikaa Group of Institutions, Ammapettai, Tiruchi, to celebrate the day. D. Karthickeyan, professor of Physics, Government College of Engineering, Srirangam, spoke on ‘Nanomaterials for Energy and Environmental Applications.’
