BMTC achieves record 39.8% ticket revenue through UPI

Since January 2025, BMTC has been actively promoting cashless payment systems by implementing static UPI QR codes in 75% of its fleet. Many such posters with codes are stuck to the sides of the buses for passengers to scan and pay.
While the revenue from UPI was ₹19.66 crore in January, it jumped by almost ₹10 crore in February, resulting in a UPI ticket revenue of ₹29.36 crore (35.21% of the total ticket revenue of ₹83.39 crore).
On February 8, BMTC achieved a significant milestone as the digital payment (UPI) for tickets crossed ₹1 crore in a single day. The trend then continued with the average digital ticket fare collection per day standing at ₹1.04 crore in February and ₹1.14 crore in March.
“BMTC has actively promoted UPI payments to enhance passenger convenience and streamline operations. This initiative has led to a steady increase in digital transactions, reinforcing the corporation’s commitment to modernising public transport services,” said BMTC in a press release issued on Tuesday.
It is noteworthy that the hike in ticket prices, under which the minimum fare went up from ₹5 to ₹6 and maximum fare for non-air-conditioned buses went up to ₹32, also contributed to more conductors and passengers prominently using UPI as the mode of payment to avoid the change handling hassle.
“The widespread adoption of UPI payments has significantly improved the ease and speed of ticket transactions, benefiting both passengers and BMTC staff. This achievement marks a crucial step in encouraging digital payment adoption among commuters, paving the way for a cashless and more efficient ticketing system,” the release added.
