The Bharatiya Janata Party on Sunday emerged victorious in cooperative election in West Bengal's Nandigram, which is the assembly constituency of the Leader of Opposition in Bengal Assembly Suvendu Adhikari.
The result was announced in the afternoon. The BJP won 11 out of the 12 seats of Bhekutia Samabay Krishi Samity. The ruling party Trinamool Congress managed to win only one seat.
The entire area was tense since Sunday morning over the election of the Bhekutia Samabay Krishi Samity. The Trinamool and the BJP had accused each other of trying to create a ruckus by bringing outsiders to influence the results of the election. A large police force had been put in place to handle the situation.
On the contrary, TMC had won big in the cooperative elections held last month in Nandigram. In it, the BJP failed to win a single seat in Hanubhunia, Gholpukur and Birulia co-operatives.
The Bhekutia region of Nandigram has been a BJP stronghold for years. In the last assembly polls, the opposition leader was ahead of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee by about 6,000 votes from this region.
