Apple to start producing iPhone 13 in India's Foxconn plant starting April

iPhone 13 is all set to be produced in India starting April. The iPhone 13 will be produced at Apple's Foxconn plant in Chennai. The same Foxconn Plant, which was mired in controversies over ill-treatment of its employees. Apple was originally scheduled to start producing the iPhone 13 in India in January but could not do so as the Foxconn Plant was put on probation.

Things now seemed to be fine at Foxconn's end as the company, has now resolved the issues that bothered the employees. As per the Business Standard report, iPhone 13 production will start at the Foxconn plant in Sriperumbudur near Chennai from April. The iPhone 13 production will start seven months after the phone was launched in India in September last year. Apple is expected to start commercial production of the iPhone 13 for domestic as well as export markets.

Now if you are wondering whether the price of the iPhone 13 will go down once Apple starts producing the smartphone in India, you will be in for a little heartbreak. That is because Apple does not fine-tune the pricing strategy for a local market even if it produces the phone in that particular country. That is because Apple has a set global pricing strategy that it does not tamper with. Apple will not locally source components, so there is very little chance of the price of the phone going down in India. However, there may not be a shortage of supply as such in India considering Apple will start producing the iPhone 13 locally soon.

Back in January, the Foxconn plant in Chennai grabbed headlines for all the wrong reasons. The plant was accused by its employees of serving contaminated food to workers, forcing them to live in detestable conditions.

A Reuters report in December revealed that the workers in the factory are forced to live in crowded dormitories without proper water supply in toilets. They were served food infested with worms and the workers were also forced to sleep on the floor in rooms that housed between six and 30 women. The situation got worse when over 259 workers suffered from food poisoning after consuming contaminated food. Out of 259, 100 of them were even hospitalized. Following repeated complaints by the company, Apple suspended iPhone production in Foxconn temporarily and put the plant on probation until the working conditions were resolved.

Later, Foxconn issued a statement saying, "We have implemented a range of corrective actions to ensure this cannot happen again and a rigorous monitoring system to ensure workers can raise any concerns they may have, including anonymously.” The report further reveals that the plan will restart production with not more than 100 people.

For the unversed, the iPhone 12 models are produced in the Foxconn plant whereas the iPhone 11 and iPhone SE second generation are manufactured at the Wistron plant in Bengaluru. Apple produces some of the best-selling iPhones in India including the iPhone 12, iPhone 11, iPhone XR are produced in India. The reports say that Apple makes 70 per cent of the phones it sells in India.
